Modular production

I worked as a product designer at Vox Media.

On the Revenue Executions team I developed high-fidelity advertising experiences for digital channels like Vox.com, Recode, The Verge, Polygon, and Racked.

Initially I focused on applying design assets from clients—PSDs, videos, code libraries, etc.—to templates on a proprietary platform. Samsung supplied photos and graphics for the QLED TV. My role, then, was to match and adapt the visuals to a prexisting format, in this case, the slideshow unit pictured above.

As I grew familiar with the various templated units, my responsibilities shifted to non-templated units for clients requiring custom functionality. The modal unit for GMC pictured above involved three overlays triggered by toggle buttons. This work on non-templated units—developing vanilla JavaScript plugins and writing dependency-free CSS animations—empowered me to train new team members and actively document ideas about production design.

“Vax” is a yearly Vox Media hack week. In 2016 I concepted an animation library for Revenue Executions.

My goal was modularity—separating and classifying the functional components of CSS animation into managable clusters for rapid design of custom advertisements.

To power the library itself I built a JavaScript plugin for click-to-play web animation.
